Second Nature

Maya slowly unlocks her bike and puts the lock in her backpack. As she rides along the familiar route to her home she thinks about the weekend. She is looking forward to going to the movies with Tamika, but it may be the last movie she can afford for awhile.

Maya can't remember a time when she hasn't loved animals and nature. She began walking the neighbor's dog when she was barely big enough to hold the leash, and she volunteers every spare moment at the local animal shelter. But she has had to ask her parents for her allowance two weeks in advance just to pay for tonight's movie, and her parents have said "No more advances!" She doesn't know how she will pay for her half of the cost of the summer nature camp, but she doesn't want to give up caring for animals who are depending upon her.

What suggestions do you have for Maya on how to follow her dream without causing more stress in her life?
